A 28 amino acid peptide synthesized in the central nervous system and gastrointestinal tract. It belongs to the secretin glucagon-CRF family and is widely distributed in the central and peripheral nervous systems. In acting as both a neurotransmitter and hormone that has powerful hypotensive and vasodilatory effects, this peptide plays a wide role in a range of biological activities, including vaso- and bronchodilation, smooth muscle relaxation, and stimulation of secretin. When paired with the adrenegic drug phentolamine and injected, this peptide is expected to provide a new and effective solution for patients suffering from erectile dysfunction.
